Sunscreen, SPF, broad spectrum protection, not a day goes by when the importance of protecting our skin from the sun’s damaging rays doesn’t come up somewhere. It can be really confusing to figure out just what is what these days. And the rules seem to change as time goes by. So, what’s up with sunscreen?
We hear a lot about the importance of wearing sunscreen. It’s been drilled into our heads that without it we can burn our skin, experience the signs of premature aging and, of course, place ourselves at risk of getting skin cancer. There isn’t a dermatologist, beauty magazine or skin care TV commercial these days that doesn’t tout the importance of wearing sunscreen or other protective products. And SPF products seem to come in all forms, from clothing to cosmetics. But everything we read isn’t necessarily the truth. Let’s break down some common sunscreen myths and get the facts straight once and for all.
Our skin is the largest organ of the body and, boy, can it get abused! Between pollution, unprotected sun exposure, and nonexistent skin care routines, our skin can really take a beating in the process. It’s time to break some of our bad habits and avoid some very common skin mistakes to give our skin a break.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve made a lot of skin mistakes when it comes to my own beauty regimen. Back in the day, I would sunbathe with baby oil in pursuit of the perfect tan. When that wasn’t possible, I would visit a tanning salon. I washed my face with any old bar soap and I wasn’t a regular user of body lotion. Yikes! Who was that girl? Oh, if I only knew then what I know now. I’m sure we’ve all cringed at our beauty mistakes over the years, but it’s time to stop the cycle! I’m going to expose the top five ways to wreck our skin so we can stop the madness immediately! Keep Reading
Most people think there’s a very complicated skin care regimen that they need to follow to obtain that youthful, gorgeous glow. But the secret to a flawless complexion really isn’t that complicated and it starts with something as simple as a little hydration.
Here are a few tips to help you achieve flawless, glowing skin.
What causes our skin to look and feel dry?
You can always tell when your skin is on the dry side because if you look closely in the mirror it actually looks dry. You may see little flaky patches of skin on the surface; your skin will feel tighter than usual and it may be sensitive to the weather and temperature changes. When our skin is dry it has the tendency to be redder in color and our fine lines and wrinkles may be more apparent.
There are several contributors to dry skin that include: cold weather, exposure to the sun, the wind, over washing or over exfoliating, not removing makeup at night, wearing tight and itchy clothing, and even fragrances . The good news is: dehydrated skin is easily avoided.
Getting rid of dry skin.
The way you cleanse and prepare your skin for moisturizer is key for glowing skin. I find using a soft wash cloth along with your favorite cleanser is the best place to start. For dry skin be sure to try the Herbalife SKIN Soothing Aloe Cleanser. Using warm water gently massage the cleanser into your skin in a circular motion and rinse. Believe it or not even a very gentle wash cloth will help exfoliate your skin by removing the rough, dead skin cells that not only make your skin look dry but, inhibit the results of your moisturizer. It’s important to give your face and throat a thorough exfoliation at least once a week. The Herbalife SKIN Instant Reveal Berry Scrub is perfect for just that. When the dead skin barrier is removed the moisturizer can penetrate easier into the skin for maximum benefit.
Once your skin is cleansed it’s time to start with the first step towards hydration. Simply spritz your skin with a facial toner. Toners help prepare your skin to better receive your moisturizers. The Herbalife SKIN Energizing Herbal Toner can be spritzed directly onto your skin or used with a cotton ball.
When applying your facial moisturizer, whether it’s in the form of a serum, lotion or cream, it’s important to apply the product while looking in the mirror. It’s the only way you can guarantee ample coverage. I always apply 5 dots of product to my face, one on the forehead, nose, chin and both cheeks and blend in an upwards motion for maximum coverage. Lastly and very important, don’t forget your neck. It too gets dehydrated when not cared for and is one of the first places we start to notice the signs of aging. So be sure to care for this area as well.
Here are a few Skin facts:
If your moisturizer seems to be just sitting on top of your skin and not penetrating, chances are your skin needs a good exfoliating so your products can break through the dead skin barrier.
The skin around the eyes lacks in both sweat and oil glands making this area highly susceptible to dehydration. Always opt for an eye gel for daytime and a richer eye cream for nighttime to alleviate the signs of dehydration.
Our knees, elbows and feet really suffer from dryness and need our help too. Be sure to scrub these areas with a rough washcloth and soap or use an exfoliating scrub. When done scrubbing, immediately apply a nice body gel or cream to seal in hydration. The Herbal Aloe Bath and Body Care Line is perfect!
To help alleviate dry skin take shorter showers and baths and use only warm water, nothing too hot as the hot temperatures can further dry out the skin.
Keep your skin glowing from head to toe by moisturizing every single day. Bringing back that youthful glow takes only a few minutes and you will look better as a result!
Traveling, especially on an airplane, will certainly take a toll on your skin. With just a few simple steps, you can arrive at your final destination with a complexion that looks fabulous and refreshed.
Have you ever boarded an airplane looking fabulous and landed looking like you’ve aged 10 years? Well, you’re not alone. Airplane cabins have extremely low humidity that can cause our skin to become dehydrated quickly. The re-circulated dry air in the cabin is on a search for moisture and that search usually ends with our skin being sucked dry. Not only will dry skin become drier but oily skin can become even oilier. Seems crazy, but it’s true. When skin loses its water, it tends to produce more oil to compensate for the loss. So what can we do to look after our skin? Read on to learn a few simple skin care tips for air travel. Keep Reading
Whether it’s the weather, genetics, or hormones, we all get a little extra shine on our faces at times. Here are six essential tips to keep oily skin under control.
Oily skin occurs when sebaceous glands produce a high level of sebum (oil) on the skin. Often, people with oily skin have large pores, and are more prone to acne as well as shine. Anyone who’s ever experienced greasy or oily skin knows that it can be frustrating to deal with at times. But if you have oily skin, don’t fret too much, because there is one major positive to having naturally oily skin – it’s less prone to looking wrinkled than dry skin. The oil keeps skin moist, which keeps the appearance of wrinkles at bay – always a good thing!
As far as the cause of oily skin, there are many reasons our skin can get a little shiny from time to time. If you live in a tropical climate, there is natural humidity in the air, making it easy for your oil production to go into overdrive. And, if you enjoy a dry climate, you may still experience oily skin because you’re genetically predisposed. Oily skin could also be due to hormonal changes (which are most often seen in a person’s teens/early 20s). You could also have combination skin – meaning that some areas of your face are oily, and some are dry.
Regardless of the cause of your oily skin, there are ways to mitigate the shine and make your skin appear more matte. Keep Reading
The cold weather months can bring on a lot of changes to our skin. And, sometimes good skin can be much harder to achieve in the winter. But, the good news is, it is definitely possible to look and feel flawless no matter what the weather is. If you’re worried about losing that summer glow now that the colder weather is here, don’t be – there are plenty of basic winter skin care tips that will keep your skin glowing all year long!
As many parts of the world are starting to feel the chill with the blustery cold weather and icy winds, many of us are also starting to see changes in our skin. A winter skin care routine is a necessity, especially for those of us who live in cold, dry climates. In winter, there is less moisture in the air, and indoor heating systems, fireplaces and forced heaters in our cars can be dehydrating to the skin. It’s important to address this dryness in your winter skin care plan to keep your skin looking luminous. Keep Reading
With all of the beauty tips and tricks out there I have to say my absolute favorite is Beauty Sleep! We all know how important good nutrition and a healthy active lifestyle are for both our overall health and our appearance. And we all understand the importance of choosing the right skin care products to target our unique and specific needs. But do you know how crucial a good night’s sleep is?
They call it “Beauty Sleep” for a reason and that gives us a guilt free excuse to sleep in and catch as many Zzzzz’s as possible. But sometimes it just isn’t that easy.
Getting a good night’s sleep, no matter how tired we are, can be difficult. We have so many things to do, and so much on our minds, that sometimes it’s hard to shut it all down and get some quality sleep. The fact is that without sleep we tend to look tired, run down and I hate to say it… OLDER then we are! Keep Reading
A healthy diet equals healthy skin.
There is nothing as important to healthy skin and hair as a healthy diet loaded with vitamins and nutrients. Fruits and vegetables can help boost the skin’s natural defenses against sun damage and wrinkles. Foods rich in antioxidants that contain Vitamins A (beta-carotene), C and E help protect against free radicals from environmental stress. Start each day with an Herbalife® Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix to ensure you are getting the best nutrition possible for healthy skin and hair. Keep Reading
Everyone knows that a bad hair day can ruin an otherwise great day. Here are five tips to help prevent your hair from getting unruly.
Lather, rinse, rinse and rinse again.
Some days are so hectic that our hair doesn’t have a chance. We don’t have time to scrub the scalp to remove excess oils and buildup, and we don’t completely rinse shampoo and conditioner from our hair, which makes it unmanageable. Rinse thoroughly to ensure that all traces of shampoo and conditioner have been cleaned from the hair. In order to help seal the hair’s cuticle and to give you more shine, rinse your hair with cool to lukewarm water. Keep Reading
Exfoliating isn’t the most glamorous of skin health topics. It is the process of shedding the outermost layer of dead skin cells while new cells are created underneath.
Believe it or not, the human body sheds millions of skin cell particles every day. Fortunately for us, we don’t shed all of our skin at once like a snake! (I know you feel the same way I do: The thought of life-sized “skin people” all over the place is way too creepy to bear.) But tiny cell particles do slough off throughout the day without our even noticing. Keep Reading
